Bringing ideas to the community / by Matthias Kuhn, KTT manager
Technology transfer is about boosting the University's return on research investments. This may sound harsh and abstract, but it is not if you consider that the “return” is defined by social benefits for the community and prospect of a better life.

Publications are a good way to share knowledge and encourage the valorisation of University discoveries; however, it is necessary to also take a more proactive and controlled approach. Technology transfer strives to achieve that through internal

and external endeavours. The tech transfer part of this e-Newsletter aims at developing internal awareness about valorisation and at stimulating your desire to invent, innovate and find practical applications of use in our community.

Interestingly, I often hear people telling that the next breakthrough innovation will stem out of MaNEP. This shows that MaNEP is highly regarded and that there is significant trust and confidence in our ability to innovate.

Being a research group focusing mainly on fundamental research, it is
interesting to know that, according to a report from the US Department of Commerce, basic research generates a far greater economic impact than applied research.

My role as KTT manager for MaNEP is to interact with you, to stimulate the exchange of ideas and help bringing them to the community in a tangible way.

This section of the e-Newsletter is a first initiative in this direction. So please react to the articles posted below and share your views with me and your fellow inventors within MaNEP.

February 21 - A group at EPFL has been been selected to pilot the European project Sinphonia. It has received 1,9 millions Euros for 3 years and has the ambition to develop a single photon detector with unequalled performances for advanced optical communications. It involves ten teams from Western Europe and Russia.
