KTT / Successful collaboration with ABB continues by Matthias Kuhn

In December 2006, ABB and MaNEP signed a continuation agreement for their collaboration through phase II (2005 - 2009).

The aim is to develop a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) made of High Tc thin films.

To date, a 5kVA FCL was successfully tested and it is planned to build a

demonstrator in the range 20-50 kVA.
In 2002 a patent was filed by ABB, protecting the IP related to the use of the superconducting meander allowing the smooth limitation of fault currents.

One of the current developments aims at optimizing the behavior of the SFCL during asymmetrical short circuits. MaNEP provides expertise in the fabrication and characterization of thin films and ABB provides expertise with
the generation, transmission, distribution and utilization of electric energy in superconductors specifically in fault current limiters. is an example of its kind; team members from ABB and MaNEP meet on a regular basis to discuss results and plan for next steps.

ABB is a full member of MaNEP, meaning that it participates in MaNEP annual internal workshops.
Good bye / Caltech welcomes MaNEP PhD Fabrizio Carbone

A former PhD student with Dirk van der Marel's (leader of project 2) group at UniGE, Fabrizio Carbone successfully defended his thesis - "Spectroscopic signatures of electronic correlations in superconductors and

magnets" - on January 5, 2007.

Fabrizio is specialized in the electronic structure and optical properties of Bi2212 and Bi2223, high Tc superconductors, and MnSi.

He has also received a ' bourse de chercheur débutant' by the SNF for a

study of at least one year at Caltech (USA), in the group of Ahmed Zewail (Nobel laureate in 1999) , where he will start on the 1st of april, 2007.

We offer our double congratulations to the good-humoured Fabrizio, as well as our best wishes for his exciting year (or more) in the US !
And also...

MaNEP's next Summer School will be... a Winter School !

Get your skis out and not your T-shirts !
For a change, MaNEP's traditional Summer School in Saas Fee will take place in January 2009.

The precise dates will soon be decided. We'll keep you posted..

MaNEP videos starring on YouTube

3 short features about MaNEP are now visible on YouTube. The most successul seems to be the video of our mini-flying maglev wich gathered over 5500 viewers in 2 months !

If you have interesting MaNEP-related videos, please put them online or send them to Anne Rougemont (editor).
