MaNEP Workshop on Resonant X-Ray Techniques

One day MaNEP workshop on Resonant X-Ray Techniques will be organized on November 2, 2010 at the Paul Scherrer Institute (start approx. 11:00 am).

The idea of the workshop is to gather all interested groups/persons within MaNEP to discuss scientific aspects of resonant x-ray techniques and their possible applications towards understanding the properties of materials with novel electronic properties. It will start with a tutorial, so that young scientists, PhD students and postdocs can have a base for these understanding techniques, followed by an overview of possibilities offered at the Swiss Light Source and it will be rounded up by some scientific contributions.

Please reserve this date as it will be an excellent opportunity to learn about techniques and to discuss further needs. More information about the event, which will be limited to approx. 30 persons, will be communicated later on this summer. If you have any questions or input for this short workshop or on these techniques and its possibilities, please do not hesitate to contact one of us.  Urs Staub (urs.staub@psi.ch) & Marco Grioni (marco.grioni@epfl.ch).

14th Colloque Wright
"Quantum Revolution"

The 14th Colloque Wright is entitled “Quantum revolution” and will take place from November 15 to 19, 2010 at the University of Geneva, salle Piaget, Uni Dufour.
The invited speakers are: Jochen Mannhart, Wolfgang Ketterle, Alain Aspect, Rainer Blatt, David Gross.
More information will follow.

SPS vice president and secretary

The Swiss Physical Society is looking for a new vice president and a secretary as committee members, on which they have to vote for the SPS general assembly. Please send all suggestions for names of possible candidates to Urs Staub

or directly to the president of the society, Christophe Rossel at IBM rsl@zurich.ibm.com

Awards

IUPAP Young Scientist Prize

Prof. Philipp Werner, ETHZ, was awarded by the 2010 IUPAP (Young Scientist Prize in Computational Physics) with a citation "For the development and implementation of quantum Monte Carlo methods which have transformed the study of interacting electrons in solids". The prize will be awarded at the 2010 Conference on Computational Physics in Norway in June.
