Editorial

It's a Les Diablerets year! Even before you decide whether or not to actually continue reading this editorial, please make sure that

all your PhD students and postdocs, and of course yourself, have submitted their abstracts and registered for SWM18. The deadline for abstract submission is approaching rapidly.

Since the MaNEP Forum Meeting in Geneva, a new Steering Committee has assumed office (or better, lab). I thank Prof. Manfred Sigrist (ETHZ) and Prof. Alberto Morpurgo (Univ. Geneva) for their contributions to MaNEP at all levels over many years, and I would like to welcome Prof. Marta Gibert (Univ. Zurich) and Prof. Felix Baumberger (Univ. Geneva) to the Steering Committee. Please feel welcome to contact any of us with your questions, suggestions or comments. At its first meeting in February, the Steering Committee identified a number of current priorities. These will be presented to the members, and opened for discussion, at the next MaNEP Forum Meeting, which will take place during SWM18.

You may have received, or will soon receive, a request for your membership fees for 2018. Following the decision taken at the last MaNEP Forum Meeting, these fees have now been reduced by 50%: as intended, the startup phase of the association allowed some financial reserves to be established, and we plan going forward that these fees, the activities of the association and the benefits for you as a member will all remain at their current levels.

Supporting the next generation of scientists has always been a top priority for MaNEP, as an NCCR and as an association. Financial support for workshops, both of general interest and for specific focus topics, and open to the full MaNEP community, is available with minimal bureaucracy by request to the Steering Committee. We particularly encourage young scientists to apply and to use this opportunity to organise meetings, discuss emergent new topics and start collaborative projects.

The SWM18 organising committee has done an amazing job of preparing an exciting programme, both in the core areas of MaNEP and in a selection of emergent fields. The meeting continues to be an important event for the community in Switzerland, for its international collaborators and for leaders in its scientific fields. We are painfully aware of the very unfortunate overlap of SWM18 with the SPS Annual Meeting, to which MaNEP will continue to contribute in other years, and we apologise that this clash remained unavoidable despite our best efforts.

I look forward very much to seeing you in Les Diablerets!

Christian Rüegg

Spin Resonance in an Unconventional Superconductor

FigMazzone

by Daniel Mazzone, PSI
Most superconducting condensates are accurately described within the scope of the BCS-theory (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer), where electrons are bound together via virtual phonons. They are in strong contrast to so-called unconventional superconductors...

A BCS fingerprint revealed by the vortices of a high Tc superconductor

Untitled
by Christophe Berthod, Ivan Maggio-Aprile, Christoph Renner, UNIGE
Copper oxide superconductors were the first to be found superconducting above liquid nitrogen temperature in the mid-1980s, thus shattering through the maximum critical temperature of 35K foreseen by theorists. The mechanism enabling the superconducting state...

Talk with Marta Gibert
MaNEP Board, SNSF Professor at UniZH

Marta_GIBERT_FondLabo
What have been the highlights of your research during these last years?
My research has always been in the field of oxides materials; I am interested in oxide interface physics and in the engineering of high quality artificial functional heterostructures. In the last years, my work has mainly focused on the study of the perovskite nickelates. We have demonstrated how a new magnetic...
