EUCAS 2017 in Geneva

By Luca Bottura, CERN

The 13th European Conference on Applied Superconductivity, EUCAS 2017, will be held 17-21 September 2017 in the International Conference Centre of Geneva (CICG), hosted by CERN in collaboration with the University of Geneva and EPFL-SPC. Full details about the conference scope and program can be found at http://www.eucas2017.org/.

EUCAS is a worldwide forum for physicists and engineers, and provides an ideal platform to share knowledge and the most recent advances in all areas of applied superconductivity : from large-scale applications to miniature electronics devices, with a traditional focus on advanced materials and conductors. The broad scope is at the same time a challenge and an opportunity to foster novel, inter-disciplinary approaches and promote cross-fertilization among the various fields of applied superconductivity.

The Scientific Program Committee has just reviewed the over thousand abstracts received, and has built a diverse and exciting program. First class plenary talks will cover basic properties of superconductors (Prof. Ted Forgan, University of Birmingham), superconducting materials (Dr. Michael Eisterer, Technical University of Vienna), the newest developments on HTS for high field science magnets (Dr. Hubertus Weijers, Florida State University), and superconducting electronics (Prof. Pascal Febvre, Université Savoie Mont Blanc).

The scientific program will be complemented by a series of outreach and public events on electricity, magnetism and superconductivity: exhibits with superconducting magnets in Geneva, student sessions at S’Cool Lab, a public event at the CERN globe thanks to the Physiscope on Tuesday 12 September 2017, and the lecture for the opening of the academic year by Dr. Fabiola Gianotti, CERN Director General, that will take place on Tuesday 19 September 2017. More details on the outreach and communication to come soon!

EUCAS 2017 gives special attention to students and young researchers. This is why we have organized a broad spectrum of short courses, in preparation of the conference itself, and will provide support to selected applicants based on their status as a student or young researcher, their CV and references.

The full day short courses in applied superconductivity (materials, electronics, large scale applications) will be held at CERN on Sunday 17 September 2017. Pre-registering for these short courses is required during the conference registration process, and details on the courses and program offered can be found at http://eucas2017.org/2017/scientific-program/short-courses/.

Conference participation and travel support is provided thanks to a special contribution of IEEE CSC. Any full-time registrant participating at the Conference is eligible to apply, with priority given to students and researchers in the first years of their career. Apply for support following instructions at http://eucas2017.org/2017/register/financial-support/.

Finally, for our industrial and institutional partners, some room is still available for sponsorship and exhibits. Full details can be found at http://eucas2017.org/2017/portfolio/.

EUCAS 2017 will be the coolest September event in Geneva. Take part !
