Feedback on Van der Waals materials workshop

The Van der Waals materials workshop series serve to keep each other informed of the latest Swiss developments in this field, to create a place to discuss pressing scientific issues, and establish collaborations whenever beneficial. We bring together all interested groups working on Van der Waals materials – from crystal-growers, to spectroscopists, device-makers, and theorists.

After a first live meeting in January 2020, just before the start of the pandemic, the second Van der Waals meeting waited a while and was finally held online, on June 24, 2021. Five young speakers covered very different topics, and inspired lively discussions. There were up to 68 participants. An informal way of meeting online happened through a virtual corridor meeting.

We hope to be able to return to in-person meetings in Fribourg soon enough!

The program of the meeting:

12:45 Virtual corridor meeting
13:15 Ignacio Gutierrez Lezama (UniGE): “Ionic-liquid gating of 2D semiconducting TMDs and their heterostructures”
13:50 Märta Tschudin (UniBAS): “Quantum sensing of Van der Waals magnets at cryogenic temperatures”
14:25 Oded Zilberberg (ETHZ): “Electrically-tunable flat bands, topology, and magnetism in twisted bilayer graphene”
15:00-15:15 Virtual corridor meeting
15:15 Folkert de Vries (ETHZ): “Engineered correlated states in twisted double bilayer graphene”
15:50 Philip Moll (EPFL): “Layered metals in 3D: New directions beyond the flatland”
16:25 Virtual corridor meeting
