Editorial

Welcome to the new website of the association MaNEP Switzerland! It is intended to become a primary information and communication platform for all members of the MaNEP Switzerland Network as well as interested non-member visitors. The public pages showcase scientific achievements, networking events, schools, workshops and public outreach initiatives. They are further designed as a gateway for industry to valorize the competences and advanced infrastructure of the Network through collaborations. A member only restricted access intranet is under development. In addition to a complete directory, it will facilitate the sharing of research interests, technical facilities, materials, samples and many more practical information members will find useful – stay tuned.

A regular newsletter will inform about the Network activities and achievements. We have made the editorial choice to fully embed the newsletter into the website to offer an interactive reading experience. In this issue, you will read that Thierry Giamarchi has been elected to the French Academy of Sciences and nominated APS Fellow and Johan Chang received the European Lewy-Bertaut Prize 2013 – congratulations to both. Congratulations also to Iris Crassee, Jill Guyonnet and Baptiste Hildebrand for their best PhD and Master Thesis awards. In July 2013, the corner stone of the new SwissFEL was laid at PSI, a facility that will offer fascinating new research opportunities. We unfortunately also have to report very sad news with the passing away in quick succession of Øystein Fischer and Markus Büttiker, two distinguished and very active members who are dearly missed.

Several events are announced for 2014, including a topical meeting on 2D transition metal dichalcogenides and contributions the 2014 Swiss Physical Society meeting programme. Proposals for MaNEP Switzerland sponsored topical meetings and small workshops are welcome. Applications are open for internships and exchange student, two programs which used to be very popular among Master students during the NCCR MaNEP.

As of today, MaNEP Switzerland counts 47 full and 114 associate members. We look forward to many more scientists and researchers joining the association to build a strong network in the area of novel quantum materials and devices.

I wish you a pleasant reading of the newsletter and I hope the MaNEP Switzerland website will develop into an appreciated platform, contributing to an open and dynamic network.

A thermoelectric materials emulator

Converting heat directly into power represents a potential major source of renewable energy. An international group of physicists recently accomplished an experiment with cold atoms trapped by lasers at ETHZ which simulates this physical phenomenon. The theoretical predictions were made at the University of Geneva, École Polytechnique and Collège de France in Paris, and ...

Electrons with a "split personality"

Researchers from the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) have been investigating interactions of the electrons responsible for conducting electricity in the high-temperature superconductor La1.77Sr0.23CuO4  above the transition temperature. These experiments at the PSI revealed that electrons have a "split personality"...
