General information

Participants

This winter school is open to all PhD students and postdocs from Switzerland and abroad, working in the research and development of materials with novel electronic properties. The number of places is limited. Registrations will be taken in the order received, with priority given to people attending the school for the first time. Members of the MaNEP Network benefit from a reduced registration fee. There will be no support by CUSO due to discontinued doctoral program in physics, but students from UniGE and EPFL can get support from their institution (see below).

Location

The school takes place in Saas-Fee, a beautiful village located at 1800 meters in the Canton of Valais, and surrounded by a fantastic chain of mountains culminating above 4000 meters. Vehicles are banned from the village. A large car park is available at the entrance of the village, but the daily price is high; we strongly recommend that participants use public transportation. The easiest way to reach Saas-Fee is by train to Visp or Brig, and then by postal bus to Saas-Fee. Take the bus in front of the Visp or Brig train station. For the train and bus timetable, please take a look at the SBB-CFF-FFS web site.

Venue

On-site registration will be open on Sunday, January 8, from 4 pm to 7 pm. Sunday evening, a dinner will be served for all participants. The school will start on Monday 9, and end on Friday 13 at 2 pm.

Accommodation

The participants will be accommodated in a two-bedroom apartment close to Hotel Allalin, or in the hotel itself depending on availabilities. The lectures will be given at the Conference Center Steinmatte. To contact the hotel:

Hotel Allalin, Lomattenstrasse 7, CH 3906, Saas-Fee, Phone: +41 27 958 1000, info@allalin.ch

Ski day

A ski day is scheduled on Wednesday 11 in the Saas-Fee ski resort. Please be aware that the ski domain reaches the altitude of 3500 meters, and the temperature can be icy in January. Non-skiers will have the opportunity to take the Métro Alpin and have a break in the world's highest rotating restaurant. Many other activities are possible.

Registration fee

The normal registration fee is CHF 800. This fee covers accommodation and full board in Hotel Allalin, from the evening dinner on Sunday to the lunch on Friday, coffee breaks, a special dinner, a banquet, and school charges. The ski pass is not included. Members of the MaNEP Switzerland Network benefit from a discount of CHF 200.

A email of confirmation will be sent after your registration. Passed the deadline (October 28), you will be notified by email whether your registration is accepted or not. In order to validate the registration, you have to pay the fee by bank transfer to the account specified in the email, at the latest by November 15, 2016. An email of confirmation will be sent upon receipt of your payment.

Please Note: The PhD students from UniGE and EPFL can claim financial support from their respective institution, in the form of a partial or total reimbursement of the registration fee and travel expenses. For UniGE students, the reimbursements will be handled after the school by the organizers. For EPFL students, the EDPY will reimburse them provided they pass an exam (2 ECTS); please contact Mrs Anh Eymann for information.
